Service Project - India
With a history and culture that is more than 4500 years old, India is a
true example of “unity in diversity”. It is a country where the
language, food, clothing, physical features of people, music, and dance
changes with every 500km you travel. Being in India is an experience by
itself - where both animal and man, rich and poor, spiritual and
materialistic, intellectual and ignorant, politicians and social
crusader, religious and atheist all coexist together. It has to offer
the mighty Himalayas, the sylvan beaches, dense forests with a
biodiversity that one can boast of, a beautiful desert on one hand and
palaces, forts, historical monuments, temples, monasteries, churches,
mosques and of course the Taj Mahal on the other. It is for the
traveller to choose what he wants to experience and explore.
In 1690, Job Charnok, an employee for the East India Company chose this
site (now known as Kolkata) for a British trade settlement. The site was
selected carefully, being protected by the Hooghly River on the west, a
creek to the north, and by salt lakes about two and a half miles to the
east. At the time there were three large villages along the east bank of
the river Ganges, named, Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kalikata. These three
villages were bought by the British from local land lords.
