CHINA,
Zhuhai
Why China?
One of the most ancient civilizations in the world, China has been the
exotic orient for the western world. Formerly known as the ‘forbidden’
country it has opened its door to a culture that is ancient but also
keeping pace with the modern where 1.2 billion people call home, with
bustling markets, huge cities and surprising open spaces.
“China isn't a country - it's a different world. Unless you have a
couple of years and unlimited patience, it's best to follow a loose
itinerary here, such as following the Silk Road, sailing down the Yangzi
River, or exploring the Dr Seuss landscape of Guangxi Province. From
shop-till-you-drop metropolises to the desert landscapes of Xinjiang,
China is a land of cultural and geographic schisms. It's not that it has
completely done away with its Maoist past - it's more that the yin of
revolutionary zeal is being balanced by the yang of economic
pragmatism”. – The Lonely Planet
What
is the attraction?
Zhuhai is situated in the southwest of the Pearl River Delta of
Guangdong Province. It faces Hong Kong on the east across the Lingding
Ocean, Macau on the south, Xinhui and Taishan on the west, and Zhongshan
on the north. It is 150 kilometers away from Guangzhou. Zhuhai is a
garden-like seaside tourist city, where flowers blossom all year round.
In 1999, it was granted “International Award for Best Practices in
Improving the Living Environment” by United Nations Center for Human
Settlement and was the only winner of the award in China. Besides, it
won series of titles such as “Top Tourist City of China”, “State Garden

Architecture
New Yuan Ming Palace, Zhuhai
This partial recreation of Beijing’s once famous Old Summer Palace, a
sprawling complex of pavilions, temples, halls and gardens five times
the size of the Forbidden City that was raised to the ground by allied
British-French forces in 1860 and never rebuilt, is essentially a
historical theme park, but worth visiting all the same. Ringed by wooded
hills and edging on to the Fuhai Lake, on a sunny day it is perfect for
a long walk.
Nightlife
Over in the Jida area, not far from the Holiday Inn, the Blue Tone has
the pioneering distinction of being one of the first Western-style bars
to open in Zhuhai. It still has a loyal following among expats, with a
pool table and friendly staff.
If you are wondering where all the expats in Zhuhai are hanging out,
chances are they are here in the Money Bar. This cozy, pub-like venue
with a poolroom out back gets particularly busy on weekend evenings.
Weekend trips

top pick of Zhuhai’s islands, however, is probably Dong’ao Island .
Heavily forested, it has at least one splendid beach at Nansha, which is
regarded as the best in Zhuhai. The island also has some rustic villages
and, of course, seafood restaurants.
Zhuhai cooking is characterized by the Cantonese cuisine of southern
China, which is beautifully presented and delicately flavored. There is
also a wide selection of western style and a royal feast of Chinese
medicinal foods in Zhuhai because this is an agricultural area. Zhuhai
also features "food streets". The more famous ones are Tangren, Gongbei
Yindu Hotel and Chaozhou Pavilion where tourists can not only taste
delicious food but also appreciate different architectural styles of
China
