What is the attraction in Chiapa de Corzo?

A small, attractive colonial town situated on the western state of Chiapas, this jewel enjoys a cool , provincial air. Situated on the Grijalva River valley, it si about 12 km from the state capital,Tuxtla Gutierrez.

The original inhabitants of this town were the Soctonas and the town was known as socton Nandalumi. The Soctonas bravely faced the Spanish expedition and successfully resisted the others. However, during the expeditions of Pedro de Alvarado, the Soctons were defeated. Today, one of the main attractions of the town is canon del Sumidero, a beautiful fountain built by the Spanish.

This small yet beautiful town is a gift of nature where the rivers flow through jungles, by the hills and the unimaginable flora and fauna.

The Chiapas state is famous for wooden furniture with beautiful carvings which come from the plentiful Rose wood and Mahogany trees.


What is in Chiapa de Corzo for you?

If you are looking for a quiet vacation in a picturesque yet tranquil location, Chiapa de Corzo is your dream destination. Away from the hustle bustle of city life this elegant town offers serenity in the lap of nature. Sit under the old Ceiba tree in the Arched arcades and watch life move on while you sip a warm cup of coffee. The tree has a special significance as the local Mayans believe that the tree has spread out its branches to hold the sky. Visit the temple of Santo Domingo and the sixteenth century church named after the patron saint of the town. or take a quiet stroll around this colonial convent. The Casa Angel Albino castillejas is dedicated to the memory of a local hero.

Enjoy the Fiesta Grande de Enero or The Great January Feast from 4th to 23 rd January in honour of the local saints. The celebrations include religious ceremonies, traditional music and dance and local cuisine

. However, the boat ride which t holds a special attraction which the tourists as it takes you to the most exotic island on River Grijalva come to enjoy from far and wide. The most striking feature of Chiapa de Corzo, is the sixteenth century Fuente Colonial. The fountain is in the shape of a Spanish crown and appears in all vehicle licence plates.

If you are tired and want a relaxed evening by the side of river Lerma, settle down in one of the many restaurants with a drink and the local Mayan food consisting of mainly sea food.


Evening and Night life in Mexico

Night life in Mexico is very exciting and is active all year round. If you really don't have much to do in the evenings, just hop into one of the night clubs and while away the night. The fun and frolic starts from 11 PM and continue through out the night. There are a number of beach restaurants which serve drinks with music and floor shows. Mexico offers a wide range of night life to suit your taste and pocket. In the more sophisticated and traditional night clubs and pubs customers enjoy traditional music and dance with plays cultural shows like the Mariachi. For those with a distinct taste can visit the salsa or jazz clubs with DJs holding the music.

Most night clubs in Mexico entertain from Tuesday to Sunday. Some clubs and pubs insist on customers paying a small entry fee.


Week end Excursions

Explore Chiapa de Corzo over the weekend. Take a break from your busy schedule and visit some interesting places away from the 'madding crowd.' Stunning architecture, awe inspiring museums, rivers, lakes and valleys beckon the weekend revellers. Just an hour's drive will take you away from the city heat into the lap of nature, the beautiful colonial town of San Cristobel. Close to Cristobel is Comitan famous for the lakes and ruins. Drive down the country side for about 7 hours from Chiapa to reach the mesmerising Mayan ruins Palenque.

Those who prefer short trips can visit the waterfalls El Chorreadero and El Chiflon.
